Next General Meeting

Our February general meeting will be held at the Friends Room in Wells Turner Memorial Library (2407 Main Street, Glastonbury CT) on Tuesday Febrary 21st, starting at 6:30pm. Our tentative agenda will include general chapter business, upcoming events, and updates on our international projects in Abheypur, India and Sabhung, Nepal. Meeting is open to the public, so feel free to invite your friends!

Hartford Botanical Garden Meeting

Next meeting for planning out the details to establish the Hartford Botanical Garden is scheduled for Monday, February 6th at 7pm at Whole Foods in Glastonbury (55 Welles Street).

EWB-HPC Annual Wine and Beer Tasting

It’s never too early to advertise our Winetasting event for Friday March 30th at the Pond House Café in West Hartford from 6-9pm. We will feature fine wines and beers from Cassidy Hill Vineyards, The Hartford Better Beer Company, Sunset Meadow Vineyards, and Sharpe Hill Vineyards! Profits will go toward our funds for water storage and distribution system in Sabhung, Nepal. Tickets purchased in advance are $40 each, and will escalate to $45 at the door. If you need tickets, please contact our newest fundraising chair, Maureen Fang, at fundraising@ewb-hpc.org.

EWB-USA International Conference
The 2012 EWB-USA International Conference is taking place March 22 - 24, 2012 at The Green Valley Ranch Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Registration is now open, and you can get more details here: http://www.ewb-usa.org/conference/ It is a great opportunity to network with sponsors, participate in some pretty hot topics, meet the EWB-USA staff, and much more!

CHAPTER NEWS

1. The 5th Annual Winetasting Event: The Winetasting Fundraiser has been rescheduled for Friday March 30th at the Pond House Cafe in West Hartford, from 6 to 9pm. Tickets that were sold to the original event date (11/4) can be exchanged or refunded. New tickets will be issued, so if you have the old ones, please contact one of the officers to exchange tickets. The old tickets will not be accepted at the door. There is a minimum donation of $40 for each ticket sold in advance. Ticket prices increase to $45 if sold at the door.

2. International Project in India: Jonathan Mead from our Chapter has been working closely with the University of Hartford, and the team is preparing to travel to Abheypur, India in January. They will evaluate the 5 water distribution systems that were installed, and will conduct household surveys. As part of the project closeout, there will be a technical assessment and postimplementation monitoring will be ongoing.

3. Hartford Botanical Garden Project: Located in Colt Park, the Hartford Botanical Garden is envisioned to provide community space and educational study about native Connecticut plants. This past year, HPC planted a garden and constructed a walkway in front of the Connecticut Creative Store. We will continue our efforts this upcoming year by rebuilding the brick patio and creating an event space. Stay tuned for more details as the plan unravels.

4. 2011 Northeast Region Conference: The Hartford Professional Chapter was the runner-up for the Regional Premier Chapter Award! Thank you all for supporting this Chapter!

5. Executive Committee Elections: The officers from the 2011 term will continue to serve their positions in 2012. If you are interested in holding an office position, particularly as Fundraising Chair, please contact me!

Our next EWB-HPC General Meeting will be held on Tuesday December 13th at 6:30pm in Trinity College.

Amy Dill will be presenting on behalf of the University of New Hampshire EWB Student Chapter. They have undertaken a project in San Lucas, Ecuador to address the issue of water contamination that stems primarily from livestock wastes. Please join us to learn more about their findings and proposed solutions!

We have reserved MCEC 270 at Trinity College, which a large classroom located on the second floor of a building called MCEC. There is a parking lot right behind the building, and the address of the parking lot is:

Next Stop, Nepal!

On Monday, November 7^th, five of our members left Connecticut for a two and a half week trip to Sabhung, Nepal. This is our first trip to Sabhung and is being used to conduct a health assessment of the village, an engineering assessment of how the villager’s access water, and to understand how access to water can be improved. Currently, villagers walk significant distances to springs and seeps with buckets to collect water for their daily use. Our goal, with this project, is to help improve the village’s access to water through improvements to the existing springs and seeps and help design and construct new infrastructure systems to help water into the village. Please check back often, as the group will try to relay information back to us as the trip progresses and the access to electricity and the internet service allows!

Unfortunately, the recent snow storm has left the Pond House Cafe without power. We are currently trying to reschedule the event for sometime in February or March. Any ticket for the Nov. 4th event remains valid for the rescheduled date. Now you have more time to spread the word and invite your friends and family! Sorry for any inconvenience. Volunteer Opportunity - Hartford Botanical Garden

On Sunday, May 15th, we have 60 plants to put in the ground and a 35 foot walkway to install. The only way we can be successful is with your help!

Date: Sunday, May 15th

Place: Hartford Botanical Garden, 25 Stonington St, Hartford, CT

Time: 8AM until the afternoon

We Need: You! And we need you to bring your tools as well. We need shovels and wheelbarrows and anything else helpful in planting larger plants

We will provide water during the day and lunch for everyone.

It is official! For our international project, we will be focusing on implementing a water supply system for a rural community in Sabhung, Nepal.

3) Yale Student Chapter Fundraiser - Saturday April 30th
The Yale Student Chapter is having a fundraiser next weekend aboard the Schooner Quinnipiac for their latrine system project in Kikoo, Cameroon. Tax deductible tickets are sold at $40 per person; RSVP by contacting ewbyale@gmail.com.

4) CT Invention Convention - Saturday May 14th
Although the actual event is still a couple of weeks away, registration for being a judge closes this Saturday April 30th. Please, if you are interested in being a judge, sign up for the event here: http://www.ctinventionconvention.org/Judge_Info.htm

The CT Invention Convention is an annual program that encourages students grades K-8 to research, analyze, and exhibit their creative inventions.
